DONALD Trump responded to hecklers who booed the former president when he took to the stage during a campaign speech at the weekend.

On Saturday, Trump spoke at the Libertarian Party’s national convention and did not receive the warm welcome he was accustomed to elsewhere during his campaign.

The former president is eyeing the White House for the November presidential elections.

He will face President Joe Biden, however, the Republican and Democratic nominees have not yet been formally announced.

During Saturday’s speech, Trump was reportedly constantly booed by the audience, according to CNN.

Trump eventually responded to questioners, saying they needed to nominate him or “at least vote” for him.

“Now I think you should nominate me or at least vote for me, and we should win together,” Trump said.

“Because libertarians want to vote for me… and it’s very important because we have to get rid of the worst president in history.”

He went on to mock the percentage of votes that the Libertarian party managed to obtain in the national elections.

“Only do this if you want to win. If you want to lose, don’t do it. Keep getting your 3% every four years,” Trump said.

During the 2020 presidential election, libertarian candidate Jo Jorgensen won just 1.2% of the national vote, according to the New York Times.

Amid opposing shouts, the former president continued with his speech, urging libertarian voters to support him and expel Biden from office.

He reportedly tried to appeal to voters by claiming that some of his past policies were in line with the party’s values.

Specifically, Trump pointed to tax cuts as well as funding for federal diversity, equity and inclusion programs, according to The Guardian.

Trump also promised to appoint libertarians to his Cabinet and other senior positions, including a task force that would reportedly “expeditiously review the cases of every political prisoner who has been unjustly persecuted” by the Biden administration.

At one point, Trump claimed that many libertarians actually wanted to vote for him.

“Libertarians want to vote for me and most of them will because we have to get rid of the worst president in history and together we will do it,” he said.

Not all attendees were convinced by Trump’s promises, with boos echoing throughout the speech.

What are Trump and Biden’s platforms?

A look at the issues that matter most to candidates.

Biden Talking Points:

  • The importance of democracy after the January 6th attack on the Capitol
  • Defender of abortion rights after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade at 6-3 in 2022
  • His Build Back Better plan, the $2.2 trillion infrastructure spending bill introduced in 2021
  • Support for Ukraine and Israel while they are at war
  • Highlight the strong US economy and low unemployment rates during his presidency

Trump Talking Points:

  • Slam issues on the US-Mexico border, which was a critical talking point for his 2016 victory
  • Criticize the series of criminal and civil cases filed against him
  • Applaud the Trump-appointed Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe after the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg
  • Discuss a plan to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, although he did not say which country wants to win
  • Defends parents’ rights to regulate and restrict discussion of gender, sexuality and race in schools

Several Trump supporters tried to drown out the complaints, shouting, “We want Trump!”

At one point, some of the opposing questioners got into more intense altercations.

A Libertarian attendee was reportedly escorted from the venue after being seen punching a Trump supporter, according to CNN.

Others simply turned their backs on Trump during the speech, the outlet reported.

The former president finally left the stage after just 34-35 minutes.

The speech was one of the shortest in the campaign so far, according to CNN.

During the convention, Trump was reportedly nominated to be the party’s nominee in the fall elections.

However, Libertarian Party Chairwoman Angela McArdle told CNN that the president did not file nomination papers and therefore did not qualify.

Biden was also reportedly invited to speak at the event, but did not respond to McArdle’s invitation.

Trump’s convention speech came as his campaign tried to appeal to third-party voters outside the typical Republican base.

Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller told CNN that the campaign is fully aware that the former president is not liked by the Libertarian party.

“There will be people who want him to be there and people who don’t want him to be there, but we are on the attack and competing for non-traditional votes to unite the country,” he said.
