NIGEL Farage has hinted he could launch a Donald Trump-style attempt to “hijack” the Conservative Party.

The 60-year-old Brexit firebrand said he “would have loved” to attempt a hostile takeover of the Tories – just as his former president friend did to the Republican Party in America.

Farage revealed his Trump-style plans in our new election show, which you can watch EVERY weekday on thesun.co.uk or on The Sun’s election channel on YouTube here.

Speaking on today’s episode of Never Mind The Ballots, Reform Party chairman Farage said: “What Trump did, of course, was able to hijack the Conservative party in America.

“I would have loved to have experienced that here in this country.

Also on Never Mind the Ballots:

  • Farage says if Sunak makes him an offer he will leave
  • Ex-UKIP leader says he ‘proved he was right about small boats’
  • Former Conservative leader says Chinese spies are chasing him

“But of course there are no open primaries in this country.

“The Conservative Party, several times, said it would not accept me as a member.

“And that’s why changing anything in Britain is very, very difficult.”

Voters in America vote for presidential candidates in open primaries where anyone can participate.

Every weekday, Sun political editor Harry Cole brings you the latest news and analysis from the election campaign.

This meant that Trump was able to run against Hillary Clinton in 2016 as the Republican Party candidate after receiving the most votes from members despite having no experience in politics.

Since then, he has maintained narrow control of the Republican Party, with Trump-aligned candidates rising to top party posts.

However, in the UK, most candidates to lead parties are voted out by MPs before members have a say – which Farage said prevents figures like him from leading the Tories.

The low migration activist also failed to rule out the possibility that 77-year-old billionaire Trump might endorse Reform in the future.

Asked by Sun political editor Harry Cole whether all Reform is doing is “helping Keir Starmer win”, Farage countered that if his party went bankrupt tomorrow, very few voters would switch back to the Conservatives.

He said: “In terms of winning seats, I think we can win some – not many – because of the system we have to live with.

“I think there has to be a realignment of the right.”

Farage added that he had no regrets about withdrawing more than 300 Tory-held seats to allow Boris Johnson a clear majority bid.

In the interview, which can be seen at Election of the Sun channel on YouTubeFarage revealed he might be tempted to do a deal with Rishi Sunak if he got something in return.

Farage insisted he had done the Conservatives a lot of “favours” for the party over the years – asking the Prime Minister: “What are they going to do for me?”

The honorary chairman of the Reform Party added: “Give me something in return. We can talk.”

FOR WHOM SINO RESEARCHES

THE Sun’s exclusive poll reveals that the Labor Party is on course for a big victory on July 4th.

for a big win on July 4th.

Savanta expert Chris Hopkins said: “The polls haven’t changed for 18 months.

“There is an assumption that they will start acting as soon as the election campaign is called.

“But I think what we’ve seen so far in the race is that Rishi Sunak is not a great campaigner, frankly.

“And I think there is still this assumption that if the polls move, they will move in one direction, in other words, they will narrow.

“I don’t think that’s guaranteed at this point. I think, as Ryan said, you know, the Labor Party needs to have an incredibly safe campaign.

“And I think it’s not beneficial for them to go all guns blazing against the policy.”

Researcher Chris added: “I think ‘safe’ is the word of the day.

“Of course, the Conservative Party needs to come up with something, but at the moment it looks like a really real core voting strategy.”
