DESPITE being found guilty of 34 criminal counts of falsifying business records, support for Donald Trump’s presidency remains strong.

Trump, who has gained a large following since 2016, just became the first former president to be convicted of a crime on Thursday in a Manhattan court.

But it does not appear that his conviction will result in a major loss of support among his voters.

The former president, who once said during his 2016 campaign that “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot someone, and I wouldn’t lose any voters,” appears to be proving his theory correct even eight years later .

Before the trial, 81% of people who identify as Republicans said they would vote for Trump in this year’s presidential election, according to a poll conducted by Speaker searchwho interviewed 500 Republicans and 500 Democrats.

After the trial, that number dropped slightly to 77% among those who lean right.

And among them, 85% would still vote for Trump even if the party nominated someone else at next month’s Republican National Convention, just four days after the former president returns to court to be sentenced on July 11.

In fact, just one day after the guilty verdict was released, the Trump campaign announced that it had raised nearly $53 million in small online donations.

The record volume of donations reached more than $2 million raised per hour, according to the campaign, which said in a statement that “the political witch hunt has awakened the MAGA movement like never before.”

According to the same Talker Research survey, only 66% of Republicans were able to identify the reason why the former president was being tried, as opposed to 80% of Democrats.

Republicans were also three times more likely to be surprised by the verdict than Democrats.

Perhaps the most polarizing part of the poll, not surprisingly, fell on who agreed with the verdict.

90% of those who leaned left felt that Trump was guilty and the verdict was correct, while only 17% of Republicans agreed that Trump was guilty, with 65% of them disagreeing.

But when asked who they would vote for, the poll deadlocked – 42% for Trump and Biden, with 10% unsure, 2% voting third party and 4% not voting at all.

But Joe Biden, who is the oldest president ever, at 81, has a voter base that is much less enthusiastic about his nomination.

In fact, more than 70% of voters, regardless of party, do not want Biden to run for re-election, including about half of Democrats, according to polls from Reuters and the Associated Press.

Biden’s support stems mainly from opposition to Trump.

95% of those who plan to vote for Biden are mainly motivated by preventing Trump from winning the election, rather than actually supporting the current president’s campaign and policies.

Biden has had problems particularly with younger voters.

In 2020, voters between the ages of 18 and 29 made up about 1 in 6 voters at the polls, with Biden winning that base by more than 20 points, according to exit polls.

However, times have changed, as 62% of voters under 30 now have an unfavorable opinion of Biden, with only 24% approving of the work he has been doing.

But that doesn’t mean Trump has won their support.

In fact, most Americans do not favor another rematch between Biden and Trump and would like to see two new candidates this year, as 56% of people in the Reuters poll, including a third of Republicans, said Trump should not run for office. again.

Just 13% of American voters said the country was on the right track, according to a study Siena College Surveya record low.
