Former President Kevin McCarthy said Sunday that “every American should accept the results” of the upcoming presidential election, as some Republicans have repeatedly refused to say whether they will accept the results regardless of who wins.

Speaking on CNN’s “Inside Politics,” McCarthy also criticized Democrats for defying “every elected Republican president since George Bush,” specifically blaming Maryland Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin for saying that “Trump should be impeached even before to take office.”

“This is a question for the entire American public. We have to go beyond that,” added McCarthy.

In late 2020, McCarthy signed an amicus brief alongside other GOP members of Congress urging the Supreme Court to review a Texas lawsuit challenging election results in several swing states.

He too voted not to certify the election results of Arizona and Pennsylvania on January 6, 2021, joining 138 of his House colleagues in opposing the election results of some states.

Earlier Sunday, Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that he would “certainly” accept the results of the upcoming election.

“That has always been the case, because in America the peaceful transfer of power is sacrosanct,” Jeffries said, adding: “That’s one of the reasons why many Americans – Democrats, independents and mainstream Republicans alike – have been troubled by election denial or the denial we saw coming from across the hall.”
