RISHI Sunak could call a summer general election if he avoids elimination in next month’s council vote.
The choice between elections in July or November is now “very tenuous”, say senior government sources.
But Conservative MPs reacted furiously to talk of early elections – warning they could oust him as prime minister if he dared to call an early election.
The prime minister could use next month’s local elections to announce a date for an election in June or July, government sources said.
One source said: “If the local elections are really bad, we will probably have to go in November. If it’s really good, we’ll probably go in November.
“But is there a point in the middle where you call it?
“There’s a world where you cross Rwanda, a flight leaves and you think – fuck it, let’s go.
“Ultimately, the decision is the Prime Minister’s – and it is quite a decision.
“Those options are genuinely very slim – there’s not much difference between them right now.”
But No 10 is worried about a huge backlash among Conservative MPs if they call an election.
And a furious Tory MP warned they could try to remove Sunak as prime minister if he tried to trigger an early election.
The deputy got angry: “This will push some of us to the limit.
“If we think that after Rishi locals will pull the trigger on the election, perhaps we think that we will put up letters of no confidence now to prevent this.
“It is better to pass the baton to someone else to be prime minister than to be massacred in an election now.”
