WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump will address attendees of the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s “2024 Road to Majority” conference in Washington on Saturday — an evangelical group whose advocacy for a national abortion ban conflicts with Trump’s political statements on the subject.

Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has walked a tightrope in his comments on abortion restrictions, which Democrats see as a risk to the Republican Party come November. Earlier this year, he refused to support a national abortion ban, saying the issue should be left for states to decide.

Despite their differences, Christian conservatives constitute a key part of Trump’s base and praised the appointment of three conservative justices to the Supreme Court, who later overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

The Faith and Freedom coalition has advocated for abortion bans in many states since the June 2022 Supreme Court ruling. On Saturday, in Trump’s ninth appearance at the group’s “Road to Majority” conference, the former president will be welcomed by open arms, said Ralph Reed, the group’s founder and president, in a statement earlier this week.

“I am confident that President Trump will receive the enthusiastic response from our grassroots activists that he has earned by being such a strong defender of our shared values of faith and freedom,” Reed said.

The former president has been vocal on the issue of abortion for decades, referring to himself as “pro-choice” and “pro-life” at various times.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley are also scheduled to speak at the conference on Saturday.
