PLanned Parenthood, the nonprofit that provides sexual and reproductive health services in the U.S., announced it will spend $40 million ahead of the 2024 elections in a bid to influence key races in several swing states, according to The Associated Press.

The group hopes that outrage over the overturn of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that created the constitutional right to abortion, help President Joe Biden and top Democrats in Congress.

Most Republican-controlled states have imposed new restrictions on abortion since the repeal of Roe v. Wade. Wade, including some prohibitions at all stages of pregnancy.

“Abortion will be the message of this election and it will be the way we energize voters,” said Jenny Lawson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes, cited by the Associated Press. “It will be what allows us to win.”

Kansas, Kentucky, Montana and Ohio, all states that generally vote Republican, supported abortion rights advocates in ballot measures following the 2022 Supreme Court decision. Voters in other swing states, such as Arizona, Nevada and Florida, will also have abortion referendums on their ballots in November.

Planned Parenthood is initially planning to target its efforts in eight swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Montana, New Hampshire and New York. They will try to reach voters through canvassing, phone calls, TV and mail advertisements.

The nonprofit previously spent $45 million supporting Biden’s 2020 campaign and $50 million on the 2022 midterm congressional elections.
