The Conservative leadership election kicked into action before the Prime Minister had even resigned – with front-runner Kemi Badenoch SAVED by a key Boris Johnson ally.

The polls have not yet opened, but former MP Nadine Dorries has attacked Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch and said Rishi Sunak’s “chaos would continue.”

Nadine Dorries told The Sun political editor Harry Cole Badenoch she would be an ‘absolute disaster’ as Conservative leader

The business secretary is seen as a favorite to succeed Rishi Sunak if the Conservatives are eliminated at the polls tomorrow.

Boris supporter Nadine told The Sun’s Never Mind The Ballots that Kemi would be an “absolute disaster” and that we need a “cleansing” of the current crop of Tory leaders.

She said: “If Kemi Badenoch becomes leader of the Conservative Party it will mean a continuation of chaos within the Conservative Party. It will mean the continuation of those people I talk about in my book, like Dougie Smith and others, and it will be an absolute disaster.

“The Conservative party needs a cleansing of those individuals who helped create the chaotic position we now find ourselves in.

“It can’t be Kemi Badenoch if we want a fresh start and we want a grown-up Conservative Party.”

Badenoch has had to distance himself from claims he is preparing to replace Sunak if he falls on election night.

Recently a website called kemi4leader.co.uk has emerged which was registered earlier this year and currently redirects to the Conservative Party website.

A source close to the business secretary said it had “nothing to do with her”.

Another website called backingbadenoch.co.uk is believed to be created by grassroots activists.

She is standing in North West Essex, where she won a majority of 27,594 votes at the last election.

Dorries said Sunak must immediately resign as Conservative leader if his party is decimated on election night tomorrow.

She said: “You will remember that William Hague left at 9.30am the following morning when he failed to survive.

“I think any prime minister worth his salt has to do that.”

Dorries said his party could be on the right track for another five years in power if former Prime Minister Boris Johnson were still in charge.

Our political editor, Harry Cole, will host a star-studded panel of experts live from Sun HQ at 10.15pm on Thursday for instant reaction to the important exit poll.

And then we’ll be back at 8am on Friday to analyze the full results and fallout from the race for number 10.

Britain could wake up to a new prime minister on July 5 if Sir Keir Starmer proves the polls are correct and enters Downing Street.

But can Rishi Sunak do enough to deny the Labor leader a feared absolute majority and prevent a large-scale purge of the Tories?

For the best analysis, tune in to YouTube of the Sun page or thesun.co.uk. You will not want to miss it.

She said: “I don’t think we would be looking at a massive majority of 80, because we have been in power for 14 years and it is very difficult for a government that has been in power for 14 years to come back with a massive majority.

“But we would have returned with Boris Johnson against Keir Starmer, with a majority of around 40 deputies”.
