OVER the last five decades, we have supported both the Labor and Conservative parties.

Our commitment has always been to keep the Government’s feet to the fire.

What will the front page of tomorrow’s Sun look like?

And that is what we will do every day of the next Parliament.

Everything is at stake for our country in these elections.

Common sense values are what the Sun believes in.

Britain as a meritocracy where people, regardless of background, can get ahead in life through their own hard work.

Freedom of expression, free press and freedom for our journalists to expose hypocrisy and irregularities.

Free trade. Freedom for businesses to prosper and create jobs, and for consumers to buy what they want.

Strong borders for controlled immigration. Decent public services that provide taxpayers with excellent education and medical care.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has many policies that we support.

Rwanda plans to stop small boats. Your commitment to eliminate National Insurance tax on employment.

A ban on teaching harmful gender ideology in schools. Pumping the brakes in the headlong rush towards Net Zero. Your long-standing and principled commitment to our Brexit freedoms.

He did his best to fix the economic mess he inherited, much of which was caused by the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

Inflation was at 11% when he became prime minister. He reduced the rate to 2% – in part because he resisted the unions’ wild wage demands.

But the insurmountable problem facing the Conservatives is that – over 14 often chaotic years – they have become a divided mob, more interested in fighting themselves than in governing the country.

When Rishi Sunak moved to number 10, Britain had had five prime ministers in just 12 years. In 2022 alone, there were four Secretaries of the Interior, four Chancellors and five Secretaries of Education.

All this revolt, betrayal and chaos took a toll.

The Conservatives have allowed a Work From Home civil service “bubble”, lots of activists and human rights lawyers and judges to surround them, frustrating sensible policies. Illegal and legal immigration has not been kept under control.

Taxes have reached the highest level since World War II. Conspiring against the leadership has been endless. Vulgar scandals – most recently gambling over the timing of elections – have broken public trust.

To put it bluntly, conservatives are exhausted.

They need a period of opposition to unite around a common set of principles that can finally put an end to all the years of internal war.

It’s time for a change.

Nigel Farage’s manifesto – lower taxes, less immigration, downsizing the bloated state – resonated with millions of people, including many working-class voters who backed Boris Johnson in 2019.

But Reform is a one-man group that, at best, only manages to win over a handful of deputies and never manages to implement its policies.

The Liberal Democrats, meanwhile, are a joke – with a leader who spent the most depressing of campaigns pulling off ridiculous stunts.

Which means it’s time for Work.

There is no doubt that Sir Keir Starmer has fought hard to change his party for the better, even if it is still a work in progress.

The antisemitism that prevailed under Jeremy Corbyn has largely disappeared, and Sir Keir has distanced himself from the crazy Marxist and parliamentary Corbynist policies.

Sir Keir has been solid in his support for Ukraine and also for Israel – despite coming under significant pressure from left-wing Labor MPs who quickly forgot the 7 October atrocity inflicted by the terrorist organization Hamas.

Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves has successfully worked hard to gain business support. They insist they will govern as moderates, whose main ambition is to boost economic growth. The Sun supports this.

The Labor Party is strong in its support for the Union and in strengthening the ties that unite our United Kingdom.

Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting promises a radical reinvention to make the NHS put patients first, not administrative staff. Leadership promises to ignore the concerns of NIMBYs to mandate the construction of millions of new homes and infrastructure we need.

There are still many concerns about the work.

They have no clear plan to control immigration, legal or illegal.

They ruled out the possibility of increases in VAT, income tax and Social Security – but, as independent think tanks agree, labor taxes are rising. They just haven’t admitted which ones yet.

Sir Keir, a former Remainer, is now talking about wanting closer ties with Brussels – which could mean sacrificing some of our new-found Brexit freedoms.

He has a mountain to climb, with a disillusioned electorate and low approval ratings.

But by dragging his party back into the center of British politics for the first time since Tony Blair was in 10th place, Sir Keir has earned the right to take charge.

We will hold Labor to account, without fear or favour.

But we wish them every success.
