PIERS Morgan has described the landslide predicted by the Labor Party as a political “earthquake” and a “seismic night” for the UK.

It comes at a time when an exit poll projects the Labor Party advancing over Downing Street with a majority that could eclipse Tony Blair’s defeat in 1997.

Labor is expected to occupy 410 seats, an increase of 209 compared to 2019.

This will leave the Conservatives with just 131 MPs, 241 short of Boris Johnson’s 80-seat majority five years ago.

The Liberal Democrats are expected to get 61 deputies and the Reformers are expected to get 13 deputies, the exit poll suggests.

Piers, who has interviewed Rishi Sunak twice, reacted quickly to the first indication of the election results.

He said, “It’s an earthquake. This is a political and social earthquake for this country, the likes of which I have never seen in my lifetime.

“I think first of all we have to say ‘congratulations to Keir Starmer, who has taken the party from being completely unelectable under Jeremy Corbyn to a party with this huge majority.

“It is clear that there is now enormous pressure on him to live up to the faith that the electorate has shown him.

“A disaster for the Conservative Party that cannot be underestimated. Either way, it’s a seismic night.”

Exit polling suggests 14 years of Conservative rule will come to an end after Sunak’s early election gamble failed to revive Tory fortunes.

This will leave the party with one of the lowest numbers of MPs in modern times – and represents a huge drop from the 365 seats won by Johnson in 2019.

Piers added: “I don’t think this is necessarily down to Starmer’s fantastic, charismatic personality or any big policies.

“Yet would Jeremy Corbyn ever have come close to something like this, regardless of what the Conservatives had done?

“In terms of how he made the party more electable, moving it to the center, taking positions on things like Israel – very controversial for a lot of his party.

“Pretty brave decisions as leader of the Labor Party, actually. For him now, the fundamental issue is that we have seen so little flesh in terms of what his policies will be.

“We already know they have excluded two-thirds of most tax revenue streams, so they will go after the rich – we are hearing about inheritance tax, VAT on independent schools, all that sort of thing.

“You can get away with it if it looks like you’re actually improving everyone else’s lives. But if it’s not, and it’s destroying the middle class and the rich, then things could unravel quickly.”

Unless he defies the odds and avoids an expected heavy defeat, the prime minister will formally resign to King Charles on Friday morning, before Sir Keir is invited by the monarch to form the next government.

The Labor leader will then name his cabinet before finalizing a series of new laws that are likely to be announced to Parliament on July 17.

Meanwhile, Penny Mordaunt, Grant Shapps, Suella Braverman, Steve Baker and Robert Jenrick face battles to keep their seats.

In Scotland, the SNP is expected to secure 10 seats and Plaid Cymru in Wales four.
