RISHI Sunak will reportedly resign as leader of the Conservative Party today after exit polls predicted a Tory wipeout.

The prime minister is expected to announce his resignation this morning, according to sources.

Tim Shipman, chief political commentator for The Sunday Times, told Times Radio he understands the Prime Minister will resign today.

But he said Sunak “will remain in post until another leader is chosen”.

On a historic night:

  • Exit polls predicted a huge Labor victory of 410 seats
  • Piers Morgan described it as a “political and social earthquake”
  • He told our election show Never Mind The Ballots that Sir Keir MUST deliver after Tory debacle
  • A battle for the soul of the Conservative Party was already underway
  • Cabinet ministers including Jeremy Hunt and Penny Mordaunt looked likely to lose their seats
  • Farage reveled in record changes in his fledgling reform party
  • Shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson practically claimed victory for the Labor Party when she was elected

He added: “In practice, this means holding the position in parliament for three weeks before the recess.”

Sir Keir Starmer is set to become the UK’s next prime minister as voters chose a “brighter future” with the Labor Party.

The party is forecast to win an overwhelming majority of 170 seats, with the Conservatives reduced to the lowest number of MPs on record.

The exit poll suggests that Labor is on track to win 410 seats, with the Conservatives reduced to 131.

Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty visited a polling station yesterday to vote in the general election.

He said “good morning” and waved to reporters as he entered Kirby Sigston Village Hall in Northallerton.

It’s a social earthquake for this country and a disaster for the Conservatives, says Piers Morgan

Sunak hopes to return to Parliament as MP for Richmond and Northallerton.

In any other election, Sunak would have assumed his seat was safe – but polling has become more restrictive in this corner of true north Yorkshire.

His Labor opponent, Tom Wilson, genuinely believes he has a chance of removing the sitting prime minister, something that has never happened before.

In the first result of the night, shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson held off Houghton and Sunderland South, but Reform pushed the Conservatives into third place.

GREAT BRITAIN WILL WAKE UP TO A POLITICAL EARTHQUAKE

By Kate Ferguson, Sun Sunday political editor

GREAT BRITAIN will wake up to a political earthquake.

If the exit polls are right, Labor achieved victory with the biggest majority in its 100-year history.

It’s a stunning turnaround from the dark days of the Jeremy Corbyn era of 209, when the party suffered its worst result in history.

The Conservatives look set to be decimated. Europe’s most successful political party has been reduced to just 131 deputies.

Make no mistake: this is a nightmare for the Conservative Party. They now face the painful task of rebuilding and choosing a new leader.

But the big news of the night is Nigel Farage’s Reform Party, which is expected to win an impressive 13 seats.

This political maverick has thrown a grenade at Westminster – and he’s just getting started.

The reshuffle is expected to win the key seat of Hartlepool – the Red Wall seat in the former heartland of the Labor Party turned Conservative under Boris Johnson.

Nigel, 60, the godfather of Brexit, is a charismatic leader well-trained in waging war on “political elites” since his days in the European Parliament.
He had already run and failed to become deputy seven times before.

He finally won on the eighth try – and looks set to have a dozen reformist parliamentarians with him.

It has the potential to change the face of politics forever.

Sir Keir Starmer and the next Tory leader – whoever that may be – must prepare themselves.

Phillipson, who now hopes to be in Sir Keir’s first cabinet, said: “Tonight the British people have spoken and if tonight’s exit poll is again a guide to the results across our country – as so often happens – then later Over the past 14 years, the British people have opted for change.

“They chose the Labor Party and they chose the leadership of Keir Starmer.

“Today, our country, with its proud history, has chosen a better future.”

Reform also outperformed the Conservatives in Blyth and Ashington, which was also controlled by the Labor Party.

The Liberal Democrats are forecast to win 61 seats, Reform UK 13 and the Green Party two.

In Scotland, the SNP is expected to secure 10 seats and Plaid Cymru in Wales four.

Voting for broadcasters involved more than 20,000 voters in 133 polling stations.
