MIAMI (AP) – Former president donald trump is returning to the campaign trail on Tuesday, gathering voters in his home state at its premier golf resort in a celebratory mood while Democrats face tough calls about the president Joe Bidenthe chances of re-election.
Trump is getting closer a deadline to announce your running mate but there appears to be no rush as much of the attention is still focused on questions about Biden’s ability to govern for another four-year term. Some Democrats have begun calling for Biden to resign as his likely candidate after his dismal debate performance last month.
Both Biden, 81, and Trump, 78, are at least two decades older than most U.S. presidents, according to the Pew Research Center, which said the average age of all U.S. presidents at its first inauguration is 55 years old. But that hasn’t stopped Trump from arguing that he is stronger than Biden, who repeatedly stumbled, paused and sometimes couldn’t complete sentences during the June 27th debate. Trump was criticized by Democrats for making false statements during the January 6, 2021 riot debate at the US Capitol and suggesting that immigrants enter the US illegally they were accepting so-called “black jobs” and “Hispanic jobs.”
In an interview Monday with Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity, Trump said he thought Biden “could very well stay” in the race. “Nobody wants to give up like that,” Trump added. “He’s going to feel bad about himself for a long time. It’s hard to give up like this, the way they’re trying to force you out.”
In the Miami suburb of Doral, Trump will highlight his strong support in a former battleground state that has now swung toward the Republican Party. US Senator Marco Rubio, a native of Miami and one of the candidates for vice president, will participate in the rally along with other Florida politicians.
Kevin Cabrera, a Miami-Dade County commissioner who was Florida state director for Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign and is expected to speak at the rally, said he expected an “overwhelming show of unity.”
“The rally will show our unified front, showing a stark contrast to the Democrats, who are lost and fighting among themselves for Biden’s health and ability to continue,” Cabrera said.
The presumptive Republican Party nominee will also address Biden’s handling of immigration and the economy, highlighting rising home and property prices. Trump will also talk about how Florida is affected by increasing migrant arrivals as the final destination of many people illegally crossing the US-Mexico border.
The leadership crisis among Democrats may have given Trump a reason to wait for his vice president’s announcement, so as not to divert attention from Biden’s problems. Senior advisers and key allies say they don’t yet know who Trump will choose as his running mate, and many believe the choice is still evolving.
Speaking on MSNBC on Monday, Biden criticized Trump for not holding events since the debate and suggested he was “riding around in his golf cart.”
