President Joe Biden says he would be OK to lose to the former president donald trump in their electoral rematch in November, and Jon Stewart thinks that’s a huge problem.
On a interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, which aired Friday, Biden said he could accept defeat if he tried his best.
“I’ll feel like as long as I’ve given it my all and done as good a job as I know I can do, that’s what it’s all about,” Biden said.
“That’s not what this is about!” Stewart said of Biden’s comments in recent episode from “The Daily Show” which aired on Monday. “There are no participation trophies in the ultimate democracy.”
Stewart’s comments were part of a broader segment where he criticized Biden’s attitude disastrous performance during his June 27 presidential debate with Trump.
During the segment, Stewart highlighted what he considered to be “obvious weaknesses” of Biden’s campaign – particularly, the president’s multiple verbal confusions – and emphasized that the November race has become an “existential fight for freedom and democracy” in the US.
Biden’s Gaffe-Filled Responses Last Month fueled pleas for him to stay away as the presumptive Democratic nominee.
Stewart, in turn, clarified that he is not advocating Biden’s withdrawal yet. But the comedian said the current uncertainty about Biden’s candidacy could yield an unprecedented opportunity for America.
“I’m by no means saying Biden will have to drop out, but can’t we test the strength of this candidacy?” Stewart said Monday. “Do you have any idea how hungry Americans are for any hint of inspiration or leadership and a liberation from this choice of a megalomaniac and a suffocating gerontocracy?”
Stewart suggested that the Democratic Party could instead organize an open convention so that candidates could challenge Biden for the party’s nomination.
“I’m just doing a workshop here,” Stewart said.
It is true that Biden has not yet given up on trying for re-election. The presumptive Democratic nominee has repeatedly brushed aside concerns about his age and mental acuity.
Biden also issued a Letter to congressional Democrats on Monday, where he reiterated his intentions to stay in the race.
“We have 42 days until the Democratic Convention and 119 days until the general election,” Biden wrote. “It’s time for us to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump.”
That said, Biden appears to enjoy having an open convention if his last interview with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” is any indication.
“Challenge me at the convention.”

“If any of these guys don’t think I should run, run against me. Advertise for president. Challenge me at the convention,” Biden said while calling into the show on Monday.
Biden representatives did not immediately respond to a BI request for comment sent outside normal business hours.
