This week’s NATO summit will be a “decisive moment” for the elderly Joe Biden, an American political expert said last night.
Massachusetts professor Michael Butler said the US president will have to prove he is capable of leading the West through one of the most dangerous crossroads of modern times.
And amid unease in Europe about a possible Donald Trump presidency, he will have to fend off concerns that he is unfit to be commander in chief not just of the United States but also of the free world.
Professor Butler said: “This week’s NATO summit finds the alliance at a critical crossroads.
“Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, NATO is more relevant today than at any time since the end of the Cold War.
“If things go well, it could help calm growing anxieties among Europeans about American leadership of the alliance, while also helping him appear presidential.
“On the other hand, a repeat of the summit debate performance seems likely to doom his candidacy.”
Biden’s faltering appearance in a TV debate with rival Donald Trump fueled calls for him to resign amid concerns about his health.
