SIR Keir Starmer today responded to claims that US President Joe Biden is “senile” as he seeks to run for a second term.

The new prime minister defended his American counterpart after holding an hour-long bilateral meeting at the White House when he visited Washington DC for a NATO summit.

Biden faces growing calls to step down as the Democratic nominee ahead of the US elections in November.

When asked by the BBC whether Biden was senile, after a growing number of people suggested he was, the prime minister dismissed the question.

He said: “No, yesterday we had a very good bilateral meeting, we were charged for 45 minutes, we lasted almost an hour, we resolved a large number of issues at a fast pace.

“He was really in good shape.”

When asked whether Biden was mentally agile, Sir Keir said: “Absolutely, he was aware of all the details.

“We were moving at a fast pace on a number of issues, which was very important for me, because obviously it was my first opportunity to have a bilateral like this.

“And he showed incredible leadership.”

Sir Keir added: “If there is one thing that came out of the council session yesterday, it was a clear understanding from everyone here that we face more threats now than we did many years ago.

“And that we need the determination of NATO as an Alliance that has been in this defensive alliance for a long time, and President Biden has led on some of the most challenging issues that we face globally.”

The prime minister also said the president was in “good shape” after being asked whether he had seen George Clooney’s comments that he should resign.
