FFormer President Donald Trump spoke the morning after what the FBI considers an “assassination attempt” at a rally in Pennsylvania. In a new Truth Social post, Trump, 78, appealed to the public to “stand united.”

“Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday, as it was only God who prevented the unthinkable from happening. WE WILL NOT, but instead we will remain resilient in our faith and defiant in the face of evil,” he wrote. “Our love goes out to the other victims and their families. We pray for the recovery of those who were injured and we hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed.”

Trump continued: “At this time, it is more important than ever that we stand together and show our true character as Americans by remaining strong and determined, and not allowing evil to win. I truly love our country and I love you all, and I look forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week in Wisconsin.”

One participant was killed during the shooting Saturday and two spectators were seriously injured, authorities said. All were identified as men.

The FBI identified the shooter on Sunday as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Secret Service agents fatally shot Crooks, who attacked from a raised roof outside the rally site at an agricultural show in Butler, Pennsylvania, the agency said.

According to the FBI, the investigation remains active and ongoing. The reason is still unclear.

What we know so far about the Trump rally shooting

Trump, who is expected to accept the Republican nomination for president at the Republican National Convention (RNC) next week, has received well wishes and support from politicians of both political parties regarding the shooting.

The incident on Saturday occurred at around 6:15 pm local time. A series of loud pops echoed, and President Trump reached for his right ear, lowered himself to the ground, and was covered and surrounded by the Secret Service.

The former president got up from the ground, with blood pouring from his ear and running down his face, and was rushed to his SUV, where he was taken to the hospital.

“I immediately knew something was wrong as I heard a buzzing sound, gunshots and immediately felt the bullet tear through my skin,” Trump said. wrote in a Truth Social post Saturday afternoon. “There was a lot of bleeding, so I realized what was happening.”
