LOCAL Milwaukeeans and community leaders have criticized the Republican National Convention and police covering the conference after a man was shot to death by out-of-town police officers.

Samuel Sharpe Junior, believed to be in his 40s, was shot dead in the North West Milwaukee on Tuesday following an alleged dispute involving a knife.

Shocking body camera footage released by police showed a group of officers running towards two men who were allegedly fighting in the street.

A police officer is heard shouting, “Hey, hey, stop.”

Moments later, a second officer shouts, “Knife! Drop the knife, drop the knife.”

Junior, who police said carries two knives in each hand, is seen attacking the other man before police open fire.

“Hold fire, hold fire, hold fire,” one officer yells after about a dozen shots were fired.

The officer who shot Junior was from the Columbus Division of Police and was from Youngstown, Ohioauthorities said.

The unidentified officer was in Milwaukee providing extra support to local police during the Republican National convention.

The shooting occurred about a mile from the Fiserv Forum, headquarters of the RNC.

But the presence of non-locals police police officers nearly two miles from the convention center in the working-class neighborhood of King Park sparked fury from local residents.

US Sun heard from local residents and activists at a hastily held press conference at the edge of the police barricade, just meters from where the horrific shooting occurred.

Linda Sharpe, who identified herself as the deceased’s cousin, said he lived in a homeless encampment in King Park and came from a military family.

Gesturing to nearby police officers, she demanded that those gathered “find some answers to why they killed my family.”

One community leader, Alan Chavoya, criticized city officials, asking, “Why would they bring the RNC to Milwaukee when this is the kind of crap we told them would happen, and then it happened.”

He added, “Where’s the mayor? Where’s the police chief?”

‘NO JURISDICTION IN WISCONSIN’

Pastor Rodante of Infinite Church added that out-of-town officers “shouldn’t have been here in the first place.”

He said Ohio police officers “don’t have jurisdiction in Wisconsin, so why are they here policing in Wisconsin?”

Referring to the RNC, he said, “I don’t believe it was their intention to come here to do this, but the bottom line is this happened on their watch and now they owe us a response.”

Alan Chavoya added, “We don’t need the 4,500 law enforcement officers coming to our city to keep us safe, because that’s what they do.”

And attacking the security measures in place in downtown Milwaukee, he exploded: “That fence they built around that perimeter wasn’t supposed to be to keep us out of downtown.

“It’s supposed to be to stop the police from coming into our neighborhoods.”

He then sang: “Say his name, Samuel Sharpe, justice for Samuel Sharpe.”

In a statement, Chief Elaine R. Bryant of the Columbus Division of Police said, “This afternoon, the Columbus Division of Police was informed of an officer-involved shooting involving CPD officers.

“The officers involved were in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, assisting the Milwaukee Police Department with security during the Republican National Convention.

“The incident occurred on the external perimeter of the RNC, within the operational zone to which our officers were allocated.

“CPD officers encountered an armed individual threatening another person and subsequently discharged their weapons.

“In the interest of transparency, I am releasing body-worn camera footage of the shooting.

“I have contacted the Milwaukee Police Department to advise them of my decision to release this footage.

“To avoid compromising the integrity of the active investigation conducted by the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, the Columbus Division of Police Public Records unit will release the remaining videos pursuant to the investigation.”
