PRESIDENT Joe Biden has ended his re-election campaign following calls from prominent Democrats to drop out of the race.
Biden’s age, 81, was a cause for concern throughout his presidential campaign, but his debate performance against Donald Trump diminished confidence in his party.
The president initially campaigned in 2020 with the idea that he would be president for a single term.
He outlined a plan to defeat Trump’s re-election bid and pass the torch to a new Democrat in 2024.
As the election approached, Biden. he began to backtrack on his demands and ended up deciding to run for re-election.
He continually cited the need to continue his administration based on the current state of the country, emphasizing that he still had work to do as president.
However, everything changed when he took the debate stage on June 27th.
DISASTER DEBATE
Biden’s presidential debate against Trump highlighted Biden’s weaknesses, resulting in concerns about his ability to defeat the former president in November.
Biden was already facing criticism after several public mistakes, and the pressure to prove his capabilities was greater than ever.
He struggled to form coherent sentences and even participated in a bizarre conversation about his golf skills.
Biden later explained that his debate performance was due to traveling to the D-Day anniversary in France and the G7 meeting in Italy.
At a fundraiser after the debate, he told supporters: “I wasn’t very smart. I decided to travel around the world a few times… right before the debate.”
“I didn’t listen to my team and I came back and almost fell asleep on stage,” he added.
Biden expressed a similar sentiment at a rally in North Carolina, stating, “I don’t speak as well as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to. But I know what I know: I know how to tell the truth.”

After Biden acknowledged his poor debate performance, his campaign team stepped up public appearances to prove the night was an anomaly.
During an ABC interview with George Stephanopoulos, Biden reinforced that he simply had a “bad night” during the debate.
“No indication of any serious condition. I was exhausted. I didn’t listen to my instincts in terms of preparation and – and a bad night,” the president told Stephanopoulos.
He added that he was feeling unwell and even took a test for Covid-19, but it was negative.
The president would test positive for the virus a few weeks later.
TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT
Trump survived an assassination attempt on July 13 while speaking at a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The former president turned his head to look at a chart when a bullet hit his ear.
Trump fell to the ground and was removed from the stage by the Secret Service.
He then attended the Republican National Convention a few days later to accept the party’s nomination for president.
Former Trump challengers Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis spoke in favor of his nomination and endorsed his presidential bid.
The convention was a show of unity within the Republican Party, a contrast to calls for Biden to resign among Democrats.
After Trump’s assassination attempt, his favorability rating rose 40%, according to a ABC/Ipsos Survey.
Meanwhile, Biden struggled to rise in the polls.
