MOSCOW (Reuters) – After the US president Joe Biden abandoned his bid for re-election, the Kremlin said that for Russia the most important thing was to achieve its objectives in the war in Ukraine and not in US politics, where Moscow said that a lot could change in the coming months.

Biden abandoned his re-election bid on Sunday under mounting pressure from his fellow Democrats and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee to take on Republicans. donald trump in the November elections.

“There are still four months until the elections, and this is a long period of time in which a lot can change,” the Kremlin spokesman said. Dmitri Peskov he told media outlet SHOT.

“We need to be patient and carefully monitor what happens. The priority for us is the special military operation,” Peskov said, using the euphemism for the war in Ukraine that President Vladimir Putin prefer.

Putin has said several times that he thought Biden was preferable as a future US president to Trump for Russia, even after Biden branded the Kremlin chief a “crazy son of a bitch”, although some of his remarks were ambiguous.

Russian state television released news bulletins with news of Biden’s withdrawal from the election race and Biden’s support for Harris, although it said it was unclear whether Harris would win the Democratic nomination.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on messaging app Telegram that he wished Biden good health and added that the objectives of the special military operation would be achieved.
