  • JD Vance has a net negative approval rating after the Republican National Convention.

  • Since 2000, vice presidential candidates have typically had a net positive rating of 19 points after a convention.

  • Vance has long trailed other Republicans and some question whether he was a wise choice.

Vice presidential candidates typically receive a boost in ratings after their party’s convention, but JD Vance is going against tradition.

Hot on the heels of last week’s Republican National Convention, the Ohio senator is the least liked vice presidential candidate since 1980, according to a poll analysis by CNNwhich noted that the data applies to non-holders.

Since 2000, vice presidential candidates have typically had a net positive rating immediately after the convention of plus 19 points. Vance, however, is down six points in the polls just a week after accepting the vice presidential nomination and officially starting the campaignaccording to the network.

The freshman lawmaker’s lower-than-normal approval ratings are not an anomaly, as Vance has long trailed other Republicans.

Vance much lower performance in his 2022 Ohio Senate race, at least compared to the performance of other Republicans in the state that year. Vance only defeated his opponent, then-Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan, by six percentage points. By comparison, Republican Gov. Mike DeWine crushed his Democratic opponent, former Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, by 25 percentage points in the same cycle.

“JD Vance’s selection doesn’t make sense from a statistical polling perspective,” said CNN political data reporter Harry Enten.

Harris’ team sent out a press release exulting in the numbers.

“We would like to be the first to congratulate JD Vance for making history as the least popular vice presidential pick of all time,” it reads.

The press release lists some of Vance’s policies, the first being his past support for a nationwide abortion ban.

Since then President Joe Biden has ended his re-election campaign and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic presidential candidate, some members of Trumpworld have reportedly questioned whether Vance remains a wise vice presidential running mate. Former President Donald Trump faltered with suburban voters in 2020, and Vance’s pick was widely seen as an appeal to base voters rather than an appeal aimed at attracting more swing voters.

The Trump campaign spent months perfecting its attacks against Biden and has now had to change its message, as Harris poses a different electoral threat than its predecessor. While Biden was struggling to rally young voters and minority voters for her re-election campaign, Harris is more popular among these groups and presents a big advantage to Democrats as they need high Gen Z and millennial turnout to remain competitive in the key battleground states.

There is also evidence that Republicans will closely monitor the polls over the next two weeks, in addition to Vance’s low likability ratings, as a Trump pollster warned of a potential increase in Harris numbers following his expected rise to the top of the Democratic ticket.
