  • Trump is blaming Kamala Harris for Monday’s stock market downturn.

  • But he has already tried to claim credit for the stock market rally under Biden.

  • At the time, he said investors expected him to win the 2024 election.

As global stock markets were rocked by a sharp sell-off Monday, former President Donald Trump is using downtown as the latest line of attack against his new Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Clearly there is a huge recession in the market,” Trump said he wrote on Truth Social on Monday morning as part of a series of posts attacking Harris. “The markets will NEVER accept the Radical Left Lunatic who DESTROYED San Francisco and California as a whole. Next step, THE GREAT DEPRESSION OF 2024! You can’t play with the MARKETS. KAMALA CRASH!!!”

He would repeat this last catchphrase three more times.

Monday’s U.S. recession comes after a global rout that began late last week following a drop in technology stocks and a weaker-than-expected employment report.

Trump has long tied his political fortunes to the vagaries of the stock market – something over which presidents have little or no control.

And it’s worth noting: Harris is not the president.

In January, when the S&P 500 reached a higher point During Joe Biden’s presidency, Trump tried to take credit for the market’s rise.

“THIS IS THE TRUMP STOCK MARKET,” said the former president wrote on Truth Social at the time, claiming that investors were anticipating a Trump victory. “INVESTORS ARE PROJECTING THAT I WILL WIN AND THAT WILL LIFT THE MARKET.”

A Trump spokesperson did not address the apparent inconsistency but praised the strength of the economy under Trump before the COVID-19 pandemic began.

“Investors and Americans across the country agree: Kamalaconomics is as bad as Bidenomics, and no one can afford four more years,” Karoline Leavitt, press secretary for the Trump campaign, told Business Insider.

Harris’ campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s remarks.

Since Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee following Biden’s decision to step aside, Trump has struggled to develop new lines of attack against her.

So far, much of this has meant tying it to the Biden administration’s policies — although that strategy went off the rails sometimes.

Last week, at the National Association of Black Journalists’ annual conference, Trump lied about Harris’ biracial origin, saying that she “happened to become black” only recently and that previously she identified only as Indian. Harris is the daughter of immigrants from India and Jamaica.
