In honor of Earth Day, President Biden is announcing $7 billion in grants for solar energy projects serving low- and moderate-income communities at an event Monday in northern Virginia.

The program aims to alleviate the high upfront costs of residential solar. This could help create a lower-cost and more reliable electrical grid than the current fossil fuel-heavy system, while also reducing the relative climate impact of energy production, the administration said.

Biden is also expected to share plans to create 2,000 jobs in the American Climate Corps, a federal program based on President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal policies. The event location is itself a tribute to the previous president: Prince William Forest Park was created in 1936 through the work of the Roosevelt administration’s Civilian Conservation Corps.

Biden is scheduled to speak at 2:15 pm EDT.
