President Biden called Japan and India ‘xenophobic’ at an off-camera fundraiser in Washington on Wednesday, grouping US allies with China and Russia as he argued that the United States is right to receive immigrants.

“This election is about freedom, America and democracy. That’s why I need you so much. You know, one of the reasons our economy is growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants”, said the president.

“The reason – look, think about it. Why is China so economically stagnant? Why is Japan having problems? Why is it Russia? Why is it India? Because they are xenophobic. They don’t want immigrants. Immigrants are what make us strong. It’s not a joke. This is not an exaggeration, because we have an influx of workers who want to be here and want to contribute,” she added, according to a report from the group.

Biden has been relentlessly targeted by Republicans over immigration, which is one of the key issues heading into the 2024 election.

Biden has already criticized China for its lack of immigration as the reason for its economic problems, but has not criticized Japan, which is a key ally in Asia. He also chose words for Russia, especially during the war with Ukraine.

By including India and Japan alongside China and Russia, Biden has grouped two countries considered key allies, especially when it comes to countering China.

Biden hosted leaders from both countries at the White House last year. He hosted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2023 and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio last month. Both were also treated to state dinners.
