President Biden said Thursday that the only way to keep former President Trump out of the White House is at the polls in November, after he was found guilty in his case to silence the money in New York.
“There’s only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: at the polls,” Biden he said on X, sharing a link to a donation to your campaign.
Trump became the first former US president to be a convicted felon after a jury found him guilty on all counts of falsifying business records to hide alleged affairs during his 2016 campaign.
Biden is not expected to speak Thursday after the verdict. The president is in Delaware for the nine-year anniversary of his son Beau Biden’s death.
White House investigations spokesman Ian Sams said, “We respect the rule of law and have no additional comment” when asked about the official response to the verdict.
However, Biden’s campaign released a statement, stressing that Trump will be the Republican candidate for president, despite the conviction.
“Today in New York, we saw that no one is above the law,” said Biden communications director Michael Tyler.
“Donald Trump has always mistakenly believed that he would never face consequences for breaking the law for his own personal gain,” he added.
Tyler also argued that Trump poses a threat to democracy, a warning the Biden campaign has echoed in recent months. And he reiterated his argument that Trump’s campaign is “unbalanced” and “revenge and retribution”.
Trump’s campaign also raised funds for his sentencing on Thursday.
“I was just convicted in a fraudulent political witch hunt trial: I DID NOTHING WRONG!” his campaign said in a fundraising email. “They broke into my house, arrested me, took my photo and now they’ve just convicted me!”
“But with your support at this moment in history, WE WILL TAKE BACK THE WHITE HOUSE AND MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
