President Biden will travel to Wilmington, Del., on Tuesday on an unscheduled trip home after his son Hunter Biden was convicted of gun possession earlier in the day.
The president added a trip to his home in Delaware a few hours after the verdict to his schedule. He will depart for Joint Base Andrews to depart on Air Force One for Wilmington at about 3 p.m., shortly after a previously scheduled speech at a gun safety checkpoint in Washington.
Biden is expected to arrive in Wilmington shortly before 4 p.m. He was previously scheduled to return to the White House and is scheduled to leave Wednesday morning for Italy to attend the G-7 summit during the week.
Hunter Biden was convicted of three felony gun charges after about three hours of deliberation, marking the first criminal conviction of the son of a sitting president. The charges involve Hunter Biden lying on a form about being addicted to drugs when obtaining a firearm in 2018.
Biden’s speech at the Washington Hilton will be at Everytown’s Gun Sense University, where he is expected to address gun violence prevention and his efforts to restrict gun purchases and use.
On Tuesday, the president said he would accept the outcome of his son’s conviction. He also reiterated his support for his son and appealed to other families whose loved ones struggled with addiction as Hunter Biden’s drug use was revealed in detail during the trial.
Although the president did not attend any of the trials, first lady Jill Biden was present for most of her son’s trial. She is currently in Wilmington and was in court moments after the verdict on Tuesday.
