(NewsNation) – In front of 75th NATO Summitmember countries are keeping an eye on American policy regarding what’s next for Ukraine, the retired general said. Wesley Clark said on “The Hill.”

Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander said European member countries see former President TrumpThe potential handling of the war in Ukraine is “dangerous” and “concerning.”

Clark explained that many previously viewed the United States as “stable,” but that trusted foundation has changed under Trump’s presidency.

“They don’t trust him. They don’t understand why he’s saying this. They think it might have something to do with his relationship with Vladimir Putin,” Clark said. “They are worried, very worried, because for us, NATO is an ocean away. For them, Russia is right next door.”

Leaders have pledged to supply weapons to Ukraine as the country enters its third year of war, with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg saying a “minimum base” for support efforts matches its previous annual spending of 43 billion dollars.

“Ukraine will not receive an invitation to join NATO at this time, but Ukraine will receive a promise of continued support with munitions and so on. … So it’s still a very positive outcome for Ukraine, I think,” he said Clark. he said.

The concerns of the 32 member countries come at a time when dissent is growing in the Democratic Party, with President Joe Bidenthe country’s health has the potential to overshadow the alliance’s message.

Stoltenberg avoided questions about the President’s mental acuity Friday, telling the media: “What I can do and NATO can do is that we can focus on the substance of NATO. And that’s exactly what we’ll do.”

Clark called his response purely political.

“He doesn’t want to get into the internal politics of the United States at this time,” Clark said. “He is just saying that he has confidence in the United States, that we will make important decisions.”
