Vice President Harris condemned the recent assassination attempt on former President Trump at a campaign event on Wednesday.
“I will say a few words about the attempt on former President Trump’s life over the weekend,” Harris said at the Michigan event.
“As we all know, it was a heinous, horrible and cowardly act. My husband [second gentleman] Douglas [Emhoff] and I’m grateful he wasn’t seriously injured,” Harris continued. “That day, as soon as we saw what was happening, we said a prayer for his well-being and our thoughts immediately turned to [former first lady] Melania [Trump,] we know and his family.”
Trump faced an assassination attempt Saturday at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where the former president was struck in the ear by a bullet. He recently wore a bandage on the ear that the bullet grazed.
“The bottom line is that no one should have to fear for the safety of a loved one because they hold public office,” Harris said at the campaign event.
“Our hearts go out to the family of Corey Comperatore, a true hero, who died protecting his family,” Harris said, referring to a man who was killed in Saturday’s rally shooting. “And Doug and I, of course, hold them very close to our hearts. We also wish those who were seriously injured that day a speedy and full recovery.”
Harris said in a statement the day of the shooting that she and her husband were “relieved that” Trump “is not seriously injured.”
“We are praying for him, his family and all those who were injured and impacted by this senseless shooting,” she continued.
