Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s favorability with the public has collapsed over the past two years amid a wave of reports about his financial disclosures and particularly gifts from wealthy donors, a new USA Today/Ipsos report finds. poll revealed.

Thomas’s net favorability in the new poll stands at -15 percentage points – 27% favorable to 42% unfavorable – a drop of 24 points compared to a net positive result of 9 points in April 2022.

The decline was driven largely by the bitter opinions of Democrats and Independents.

In 2022, Thomas’s net favorability among Democrats was -19 percentage points, but it has dropped to -63 percentage points: just 9% favorable versus 72% unfavorable.

Among independents, Thomas’s net favorability fell from +6 percentage points to -14.

Judge has also seen a slight drop in Republican support, from a net favorability of +43 two years ago to +33 this month.

Thomas has faced intense scrutiny over the past two years amid reports that he accepted luxury trips and gifts from a billionaire and Republican mega-donor.

And his wife’s involvement in the “Stop the Steal” movement that denied President Biden was the rightful winner of the 2020 presidential election led to calls for Thomas to recuse himself in related cases that reached the Supreme Court. His refusal to recuse himself angered some Democrats.

Recent polling shows that all conservative judges have dropped their net favorability ratings by at least 10 points. All currently have a negative net favorability, when none did in 2022. Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s net favorability was the lowest in 2022, at 0 percentage points.

All three liberal justices on the court have positive favorability ratings between +11 and +16 percentage points.

The poll was conducted Aug. 2-4 and included 1,024 respondents, including 282 Republicans, 324 Democrats and 310 independents. The margin of error for all respondents is plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
