Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized the Supreme Court on Thursday for delaying its ruling on former President Trump’s presidential immunity claim in his federal election interference case.

“The other point I would like to make quickly is that the Supreme Court is doing our country a grave disservice by not deciding the immunity case,” Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, said in an interview with “Morning Joe” on MSNBC.

Clinton said some Supreme Court justices apparently were trying to find loopholes for the former president during arguments before the court late last month.

“I read the excellent appeals court decision, and I believe the justices there covered every possible argument,” Clinton said, “and what we heard when this case was heard before the Supreme Court – at least to my ears – were efforts to try to find loopholes, to try to create an opportunity for Trump to try to overturn an election, to have carried out hundreds and hundreds of pages of highly classified material for his own amusement, interest, negotiation – we don’t know what.

“These are very serious charges against any American, but against someone who was president and wants to be president again — it should make any voter think not twice, but many, many times, about whether we should trust him with our country,” Clinton added. .

Late last month, the Supreme Court heard arguments for Trump’s presidential immunity claim and appeared prepared to grant him at least some protection from criminal prosecution after hearing two hours of arguments.

The court has not yet made a ruling on the immunity issue, but the justices’ long discussion about creating barriers between official conduct and personal conduct suggested they could ask the lower court to review its decision. Doing so would almost certainly delay Trump’s numerous legal challenges.

The court delayed Trump’s election interference case by only accepting the immunity claims rather than upholding the appeals court’s decision. Any new decision in the lower court may be appealed, a process that could send the case back to the higher court.

Clinton said Wednesday that the American people should have an answer about whether Trump is guilty in the federal election interference case and the other cases before they go to the polls in November to decide whether to send him back to the White House.

“Justice delayed is justice denied,” Clinton said. “And it appears that people in our country are likely to vote without knowing the outcome of these other very serious trials.”
