Trump’s former White House lawyer Ty Cobb went after Judge Aileen Cannon on Wednesday for indefinitely postponing former President Trump’s confidential criminal documents case for procedural reasons, accusing her of “incompetence.”

“I don’t think this case is going to move forward,” Cobb said in an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett. “And I think the fact that she is scheduling hearings, multiple hearings, one or two motions at a time, is compelling evidence of that. Most federal judges would have ruled on all pending motions long ago.”

“And frankly, this is a case that should have started trial yesterday or two days ago when the original trial date was set,” he continued. “This case could have easily gone to trial. Only his incompetence and perceived bias prevented this.”

Trump is accused of mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House and obstructing an investigation to recover them. Cannon, a Trump appointee, has repeatedly delayed the case and is now unlikely to be tried before the next election.

Cannon’s delays have drawn widespread criticism from Democrats, who view his actions as a defense of the former president. If he is re-elected in November, the Justice Department will likely decide to dismiss the case.

“Justice delayed is often justice denied,” said Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) earlier this month. “It is deeply frustrating that the judge is handling this case in a way that makes it highly unlikely that it will be resolved in a timely manner.”

After Cannon canceled a key trial deadline earlier this month, effectively delaying the case indefinitely, Cobb said the judge “has no intention of taking this case to trial.”

The judge has so far denied all of the defendants’ attempts to dismiss the case, but it has taken months to rule on each motion, an especially slow time given the case’s potential importance to the 2024 elections.
