Americans are mainly divided on whether they approve of former President Trump’s recent conviction in his secret trial in New York, according to a new poll.

The YouGov survey found that about 50% of Americans to agree with the jury about the members’ decision to convict the former president on 34 counts. In the same survey, about 19% said they were “not sure” whether they agreed with the decision and about 30% said they did not agree.

Trump became the first former US president to be a convicted felon on Thursday after a jury found him guilty on all counts of falsifying business records in connection with secret payments his then-fixer, Michael Cohen, made to porn star Stormy Daniels, before the 2016 election.

Shortly after the jury read the verdict, Trump protested the trial outside the courtroom.

“This was a rigged and shameful trial. The real verdict will be given by the people on November 5th, and they know what happened here, and everyone knows what happened here,” Trump said.

Other research findings included that about 47 percent of Americans agreed that the former president had a “fair trial.” About 18 percent said they were “not sure” whether Trump received a “fair trial,” while about 37 percent said he did not.

President Biden criticized Trump for his language about the fairness of the trial on Friday.

“It’s reckless, it’s dangerous, it’s irresponsible for someone to say this was rigged just because they don’t like the verdict,” said the president.

“Our judicial system must be respected and we must never allow anyone to overthrow it; it’s that simple,” he added.

The YouGov survey was conducted on May 30 and included responses from 3,040 U.S. adults.
