Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) rejected claims from former President Trump and his allies that the trial of silence was politically motivated and biased against the former president.
Schiff responded to Republican National Committee (RNC) Co-Chair Lara Trump’s appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” where she criticized prosecutors for opening the hush money case against the former president and judge who oversees the case. Trump was found guilty by a jury in New York last week on 34 counts of falsifying business records.
“Well, first, in terms of Lara Trump’s interview, and her complaint about the case being tried in New York before a New York jury, if you don’t want to be tried before a New York jury, then maybe you don’t want to . committing so many crimes in New York City, it’s very simple,” he said.
Schiff reiterated that Trump’s case, including jury selection, was handled the same way as any other case.
“And this jury was selected in part by Donald Trump and his lawyers. They looked at every single juror. He had all the rights that any other criminal defendant has in that court. And they found – this common jury of peers found him guilty on all counts. single count,” Schiff said.
“So if you don’t want to be tried in New York, don’t commit crimes in New York. But he got the same due process as everyone else and that’s exactly how it should be,” he added.
His comments echo those of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg following the verdict last Thursday, which emphasized that the case was also like any other and that “the only voice that matters is the voice of the jury.”
“While this defendant may be unlike any other in American history, we came to this trial and ultimately this verdict today in the same way as any other case that comes through the courtroom doors: by following the facts and the law, by doing so. lo, without fear or favor,” said Bragg.
