Former President Trump said he would be “OK” with being sentenced to house arrest or prison after being convicted last week of 34 felony charges in New York.
When asked on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends” how he handles the prospect of being sentenced to house arrest or prison, Trump said, “I’m OK with it.”
“I’m not sure the public would accept that,” Trump said of house arrest or prison in an interview with Fox News’ Will Cain, Pete Hegseth and Rachel Campos-Duffy that aired Sunday. “I think it would be difficult for the public to accept. At a certain point, there is a breaking point.”
The former president was convicted last week of all 34 counts of falsifying business records in New York, becoming the first former US president to become a convicted felon. The charges centered on refunds made to Trump’s former fixer and lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a hush money payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels.
His sentencing is scheduled for July 11, just four days before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Trump’s legal team has promised to appeal the case, but the case is currently expected to move forward as scheduled.
As a first-time offender for falsifying business records, Trump is unlikely to face prison time, especially since he has no criminal record. He is more likely to face a lesser punishment, such as a fine.
Trump told “Fox and Friends” that he advised his lawyers not to “beg for anything,” noting that “that’s the way it is.”
He also spoke about the impact the conviction had on his family and those around him.
“I think in many ways it’s harder for them than it is for me. They’re good people, all of them…all, all,” he said.
“I have a wonderful wife who has to hear these things all the time. They do it for this reason. They do this, all these lewd names they put on these people, and I’m not even allowed to defend myself because of the order of silence,” Trump said, without specifying who “they” are. “But they put these things up to create chaos. They’re bad people; I know everything they’re doing. I know every move they make; I understand.”
He later said that former first lady Melania Trump is “fine,” while also noting that it is “very difficult for her,” amid coverage of the trial and conviction.
