Former President Trump said Sunday that his undercover criminal trial in New York City and conviction on Thursday were “very difficult” for his wife, Melania, amid testimony recounting his alleged infidelity.

Trump was convicted on Thursday of 34 felony counts of falsifying business documents, the first time a former president has been convicted of a crime. He appealed the decision.

The charges related to hush money payments made in the weeks before the 2016 election, intended to cover up alleged past affairs between Trump and an adult film star, which he denied.

The alleged affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels occurred in 2006, just a year after Trump married Melania and months after the birth of their son, Barron.

“She’s fine, but I think it’s very difficult for her,” Trump said of the former first lady in an interview with “Fox and Friends,” adding that “in many ways, it’s harder for them.” [his family] of what I am.”

“I have a wonderful wife who hears these things all the time. They do it for this reason. They do this, all these lewd names they put on these people, and I’m not even allowed to defend myself because of the gag order. Think about it,” Trump said, without specifying who “they” are.

“But they put these things in to create chaos. These are bad people,” he continued. “I know everything they are doing. I know every move they make; I understand.”

Trump said later in the interview that he is “fine” with the possibility of going to prison. He faces up to four years in prison on the charges, although it is considered unlikely. His sentencing is scheduled for July 11.
