Convicted killer Alex Murdaugh’s son, Buster Murdaugh, is suing several companies, including Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery, for defaming documentary series in which they were involved.

The documentaries, both on Warner Bros.’ Max streaming service, Discovery and Netflix, present statements that a complaint filed last Friday says they “were defamatory and falsely accused the author of being involved in the murder of Stephen Smith.”

“[A]As a result of the specific false and defamatory statements made by Defendants and republished by Defendants, Plaintiff’s reputation was irreparably damaged and he suffered mental anguish,” the South Carolina complaint continues.

Buster Murdaugh denied having participated in the death of Smith, a schoolmate, in 2015, reacting to the past declaration to NBC News against “vicious rumors” that allege he was involved in this.

“I have tried my best to ignore the vicious rumors about my involvement in the tragic death of Stephen Smith that continue to be published in the media while I mourn the brutal murders of my mother and brother,” he said.

Buster Murdaugh’s father was sentenced to life in prison in July last year for the 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and Paul Murdaugh, his other son.

“This has been going on for a long time. These baseless rumors about my involvement with Stephen and his death are false,” Buster Murdaugh said in his statement to NBC News. “I unequivocally deny any involvement in his death and my heart goes out to the Smith family.”

The Hill reached out to Murdaugh’s attorney, Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix.
