Former Republican National Committee (RNC) leader Michael Steele said the judge overseeing former President Trump’s confidential documents case is “putting the prosecution on trial.”

Steele criticized Judge Aileen Cannon, who is overseeing the confidential documents case, for handling pretrial motions slowly and for being biased toward prosecutors on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki.” He referred to a New York Times report last week that said two of Cannon’s colleagues encouraged her to let the case go, suggesting it would be better for the case to be heard in Miami court.

“Since then, as The Times says, she has shown hostility to prosecutors, handled pretrial motions slowly and indefinitely postponed the trial. It’s almost as if the judges who encouraged her to recuse herself from this case knew how this was all going to play out. ,” he said.

“In fact, Judge Cannon has proven to be so biased in favor of Trump that she is effectively taking the charge to trial,” he added.

Cannon has indefinitely postponed the ruling on the confidential documents, making it unlikely that it will move forward before the November election. Steele mentioned a three-day hearing in the case, which began Friday, to discuss unresolved legal issues in the case.

Trump’s team argued Friday that special prosecutor Jack Smith was appointed illegally and that the case should be dismissed, according to The Associated Press. Steele described the argument as an “unlikely shot” challenge that would likely have been launched by another judge, adding that it was “legally baseless” and “unprecedented.”

“But apparently Judge Cannon needed a hearing on this. It’s the latest delay tactic from a judge who has wasted countless months on frivolous lawsuits. She has practically refused to allow Trump’s case to go to trial and has not even set a date for the start of the trial yet,” he said.

“So when it comes to the help that Trump is getting from the bank right now, that’s Exhibit A,” he added.
