Former President Trump is back in a New York courtroom on Monday, this time for the start of his first criminal trial in a matter involving a secret payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels just before the midterm elections. 2016.

The trial began on Monday with a debate over what evidence would and would not be allowed in the case. The next jury selection is expected, in which hundreds of New Yorkers are expected to be whittled down to 12 people and six alternates. This process is expected to last at least several days before opening arguments begin and key witnesses take the stand.

Trump makes history as the first former or current US president to face a criminal trial in a case that also made him the first former commander in chief to be criminally indicted.
