House approval of major foreign aid bills for Ukraine and Israel will likely be the focus of this week’s Sunday newscasts.

On Saturday, the House approved new bills to aid Ukraine and Israel amid the conflicts in which both countries are involved, after a long period of Republican infighting over whether more aid should be sent to Ukraine. In addition to being an important victory for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), the lower chamber’s approval of more aid to Ukraine will also be seen as a victory for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who will appear on “Meet the Press” on NBC this week.

“I am grateful to the United States House of Representatives, both parties, and personally to President Mike Johnson for the decision that keeps history on the right track,” Zelensky said. he said in a post on social platform X on Saturday.

“Democracy and freedom will always have global significance and will never fail as long as America helps protect them,” Zelensky’s post continued. “The vital U.S. relief bill passed by the House today will stop the spread of war, save thousands upon thousands of lives, and help both our nations become stronger.”

Johnson made the decision to reject the foreign aid bills and cut their funding from a separate border security bill through prayer, according to Rep. Mike McCaul (R-Texas), who will appear on “This Week ” from ABC. “Sunday.

“I think he was torn between trying to save his job and doing the right thing,” said McCaul, a longtime advocate for more aid to Ukraine and chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“We told him what’s at stake here, and you want to be on the right side of history. And he is a man of faith. He doesn’t wear it on his sleeve, but obviously the night before the decision he sought guidance and the next day he made the call.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), a vocal critic of aid to Ukraine, went after Johnson in the wake of the passage of foreign aid bills in the lower house.

“Zelensky thanks President Mike Johnson (D-Ukraine) for sending $61 BILLION of his hard-earned taxes to fuel a foreign war,” Greene said. he said in a post on X, which also featured a screenshot of Zelensky’s post.

“Johnson once again passed a bill with the help of Democrats, while the Republican majority voted against it,” Greene continued. “Mike Johnson is not just a traitor to our conference, he is a traitor to our country.”

A full jury in former President Trump’s New York case has now been selected. After selection of nearly 200 potential jurors by the judge, Trump’s lawyers and Manhattan prosecutors, 12 jurors and six alternates were chosen on Friday.

“We have now completed jury selection for this case,” said Judge Juan Merchan.

The trial of silence began on Monday, marking the first criminal trial of an American president. The former president was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection with reimbursements to his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, who paid an adult film star $130,000 before the 2016 election to keep silent about an alleged affair with Trump, which he denies. .

After the second day of jury selection at his trial, the former president referred to the reimbursements as “legal expenses.”

“I was paying a lawyer and we marked that off as a legal expense – some accountant. I didn’t know,” Trump told reporters. “Mark this as a legal expense. That was exactly it. And you were indicted for this?
