Americans increasingly view China as an “enemy” of the US, according to a new poll.

The search, from the Pew Research Center, found that 42% of Americans said they think China is an “enemy” of their country, an increase of 4 points compared to last year, in a similar period. In both years, only 6% of Americans surveyed said they thought China was a “partner” with their country.

The vast majority of Americans also said they had a “very unfavorable” or “somewhat unfavorable” opinion of China, at 81% in the survey, down only slightly from last year, when 83% of Americans surveyed said the same.

President Biden recently had a call with Chinese President Xi Jinping that was a follow-up to their meeting in California last year, with a senior administration official referring to the call as a “check-in.”

“Both President Biden and President Xi agreed to try to pick up the phone a little more, to use this tool as a means of managing the relationship responsibly, of being in closer contact at the leader level – which is so critical in the system. Chinese – on a more regular basis,” said the official.

The president also signed a $95 billion foreign aid package last week, which included $8 billion in security assistance to respond to Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific.

The Pew survey was conducted April 1-7, involving 3,600 people and a margin of error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.
