Explosions were reported inside Iran, while unconfirmed reports indicated that several Iranian sites were hit by Israel, according to multiple media outlets.

US authorities confirmed to CBS News, CNNIt is ABC news that the attack was carried out by Israel in response to recent Iranian airstrikes against Israel. A US official reportedly told CNN that the targets of the strikes are not nuclear or civilian.

Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported explosions near the city of Isfahan in central Iran. Iran’s state news agency Press TV also reported explosions in Isfahan.

Other unconfirmed reports indicate potential attacks near the cities of Daraa, Syria, and Baghdad, Iraq.

Flights were being diverted to western Iran on Friday morning local time, according to the Associated Press.

It is unclear what the immediate targets were, but Isfahan is home to Iranian nuclear facilities and facilities.

Iran warned on Thursday that attacking nuclear facilities could result in a change in nuclear “doctrine” in Tehran, which does not have nuclear weapons but has enriched uranium and has the ability to obtain them.

The Israeli attacks will likely further inflame tensions in the Middle East, which is already embroiled in conflicts in Gaza, northern Israel and southern Lebanon.

Israeli authorities pledged earlier this week to respond to Iran, which sent a barrage of around 300 missiles and drones against Israel last weekend.

That attack, which was largely defeated by Israeli and allied defense systems, occurred in response to an alleged Israeli attack near the Iranian embassy in Syria that killed two high-ranking commanders.

The Biden administration pressured Israel not to respond to Iran, but Israeli officials publicly argued that such a brazen Iranian attack should be responded to.

Iran, for its part, has publicly warned that any Israeli attack would be met with a much harsher response than last weekend’s attack.
