A California school district sued Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Tuesday over a new state law that prohibits schools from requiring educators to inform parents or guardians if a student uses a given name or pronoun. different.

The Chino Valley Unified School District sued the governor saying the law violates parental rights that are protected by the Constitution, increasing turmoil between the district and the state.

“This is a deeply unserious lawsuit, seemingly designed to fan the dumpster fire formerly known as Twitter, rather than surface legitimate legal claims. AB 1955 preserves the parent-child relationship, California law ensures that minors cannot legally change their name or sex without parental consent, and parents continue to have guaranteed and full access to their students’ educational records, according to federal law. We are confident that the state will quickly prevail in this case,” said Izzy Gardon, the governor’s spokeswoman.

The law says parents must be notified of a name or gender change if a student tries to change their official registration, and officials argue it doesn’t allow teachers to hide information from parents but means they won’t be forced to do it. a student’s LGBTQ identity.

“School officials do not have the right to keep secrets from parents, but parents have a constitutional right to know what their minor children are doing at school,” said Emily Rae, an attorney representing the district, NBC reported News.

This isn’t the first time the state and Chino Valley Unified School District have gotten into a legal battle, with the state previously suing the district over a rule requiring teachers to inform parents about name or pronoun changes. a student, even if the student did not attempt to change the official record.

The district ended up changing the rule to only require parental notification if an official record change is requested.

The new law has sparked controversy, as some say it protects students from forced departures, while others argue the state is allowing schools to hide information about their children.

Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, said he is moving the aerospace company’s headquarters from California due to the law.

“This is the last straw,” Musk said on his social platform Texas. .”
