Former President Donald Trump, in a rebuke of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) over the ongoing battle over how to address in vitro fertilization (IVF), said Republicans are the “leader[s]” about the subject.

“Gavin Newscum, the failed governor of California who is allowing his once beautiful state to go to hell, refuses to acknowledge that Republicans are the leaders in in vitro fertilization (fertilization),” Trump’s Truth Social post said.

IVF has been a topic of concern for lawmakers and voters over the past year after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos and fertilized eggs are considered persons under the law, resulting in the temporary pause of IVF treatment in the state.

Newsom called out Alabama’s high court in February over the ruling and said it was part of a “war on women.” Trump has also expressed support for protecting IVF treatments, and many Republicans have followed suit.

The U.S. Supreme Court once again brought reproductive rights and access to the forefront of the national debate when it overturned Roe v. Wade. Wade in 2022.

The former president often took responsibility for overturning Roe and returning abortion to individual states for regulation. He said states are working “brilliantly” as many GOP-led legislatures restrict access to abortion across the country.

“We are the ones who take care of Women, and now, after 53 years, where both Parties and all Jurists and Experts wanted the always difficult and controversial issue of Abortion to return to the United States, we have succeeded, and now the States are set your own rules and regulations – and it’s really working!” Trump’s post continued.

He said it returned the abortion issue to voters and led to “radicalization by Democrats, the murder of a child in the 8thth Month, 9th Month, or even after birth, out of the question.” Abortion advocates say abortions rarely happen this late in pregnancy and are performed to save the mother’s life.

Trump continued, saying that “it now seems likely that our country can begin to unite on the always difficult and controversial issue of abortion.”

“Now it’s up to the states, where everyone wants it and where it always should be.”
