Breastfeeding parents are now required to receive paid time off in New York under a new law that took effect Wednesday.

It requires Empire State employers to provide paid half-hour breaks to working parents who need to express breast milk during the first three years of their child’s life.

“As New York’s first mother governor, I fight every day to give working parents the protection they need to keep their families strong and healthy,” said Governor Kathy Hochul (D) in a press release.

“From our nationally leading prenatal leave program to this legislation requiring employers to give breastfeeding mothers much-needed rest time, our state continues to advocate for parents in the workplace and protect maternal health and childish,” she continued.

The paid time off requirement applies to all public and private workers. The time is added to other intervals, state rules specify.
