President Biden’s re-election campaign released its first ad targeting Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), former President Trump’s running mate, over his stance on abortion.
The one-minute ad, titled “They do not care”, was narrated by a Kentucky woman, Hadley Duvall, who was raped by her stepfather from the age of five and became pregnant at the age of 12.
“The first thing they told me when I saw the positive pregnancy test was: you have options,” Duvall says in the ad. “And if Roe v. Had Wade been overruled before, I wouldn’t have heard that and so it made me think, is there someone who can’t hear that now.”
“Trump and JD Vance don’t care about women, they don’t care about girls in this situation,” she added.
The campaign plans to run the ad, which will receive a seven-figure investment, in decisive states. They will have him during the WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday, “60 Minutes,” “The Bachelorette” and pre-Olympic coverage.
Biden’s campaign has highlighted Vance’s stance on abortion since Trump nominated him on Monday, calling him “proudly anti-choice.”
Vance applauded the overturn of Roe v. Wade and supported Texas’ abortion ban, which does not allow exceptions beyond cases where the mother’s life is at risk. He said in 2021 that “two wrongs don’t make a right” when asked whether there should be exceptions for rape and incest.
But he has begun reshaping how he talks about abortion in recent weeks, echoing Trump’s position that abortion laws should be left to the states in the wake of Roe v. Wade.
Vice President Harris, who has been the White House’s leading voice on reproductive rights, attacked Vance in a video published Wednesday for his support for abortion restrictions.
Vance is scheduled to deliver the keynote address Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
