Democratic Congressman Jerry Nadler (DN.Y.) said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) should not be punished for “doing the right thing” after Democratic leadership said it would come to Johnson’s rescue if pressure to remove him from his position materializes.
In Saturday’s comments, Nadler said Democrats are “right” to save Johnson from the impeachment motion introduced in March by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). The New York Democrat was also skeptical that hard-line Georgia Republicans would move forward with the resolution she said would reach the floor next week.
“I suspect she will not follow through on the threat,” Nadler said during her appearance on Rev. Al Sharpton’s “PoliticsNation” program on MSNBC.
“But we are certain that if she does, we must save him. Because as much as we disagree with him on everything, almost everything, we cannot allow him to be punished for doing the right thing – voting for aid to Ukraine, which is why they want to punish him.”
House Democrats said they would help save Johnson’s speakership as he put Ukraine aid on the lower house floor, which passed with bipartisan votes. Some Democrats said this would be a “unique opportunity.”
Greene’s effort won full approval from two more GOP members, Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.).
Other members of the far right, while expressing similar criticism of Johnson’s bipartisan deal, said they would not support the resolution to recall the Louisiana lawmaker. Opposition to Greene’s motion to vacate also emerged in the Senate, where some upper chamber GOP lawmakers said Congress should focus on more important priorities and Republicans should remain united until November.
