Fox News host Jesse Watters and House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) suggested Tuesday that Hunter Biden is “taking responsibility” for President Biden after being convicted on federal gun charges in Delaware.
Watters, speaking with Comer on Tuesday night, asked the Kentucky Republican whether the president’s son is “taking responsibility to save his father.”
“Well, that’s certainly true,” Comer said on Fox News’ “Jesse Watters Primetime.”
“Therefore, until the Department of Justice takes into account real and serious crimes, justice will not be served,” Comer continued. “If I listed the top 10 crimes committed by the president’s son, lying on a gun application would have been included.”
Hunter Biden was found guilty Tuesday of three felony counts of lying on federal forms about using drugs to illegally purchase a gun, making him the first son of a sitting president to be criminally convicted.
President Biden reaffirmed last week that he would not pardon his son and would accept the outcome of the case.
“You know what? He [Hunter Biden] looks like someone who has a pardon in his back pocket,” Comer said, despite Biden’s comments. “People asked today, ‘Will the president pardon Hunter Biden?’ Well, they’re not done, the Department of Justice isn’t done with him yet.”
Comer pointed to Hunter Biden’s upcoming tax evasion trial in California, along with the criminal referral submitted by Comer and two other GOP leaders asking the DOJ to bring criminal charges against the president’s son and brother, James Biden.
The 65-page reference accuses Hunter and James Biden of lying to lawmakers during conversations with investigators and withholding information as part of “what appears to be a conscious and calculated effort to isolate Joe Biden from the duly authorized impeachment inquiry.”
The matters in question, however, have limited connection with the president.
“As I have said many times over the past week, we are not done yet. Criminal referrals are just the beginning of the accountability phase,” Comer said. “We made great efforts and were very transparent and substantive with the American people about the money this family received.”
Comer has been a central figure in the Republican Party’s impeachment inquiry into President Biden. The inquiry, however, had difficulty solidifying evidence that the Biden family engaged in corruption and that Biden was involved in his son’s foreign business dealings while serving as vice president.
