Rep. James Clyburn (D.C.) said in an interview that aired Tuesday that he plans to speak with President Biden soon to give him an assessment of where he “stands” with Americans following the president’s difficult performance in the debate.

“I planned to… talk to him later today or… tomorrow morning,” Clyburn said in an interview with “The Hill” on NewsNation’s Blake Burman. “And I’m going to tell him how I really feel.”

Clyburn said he will tell the president “where he stands with the American people” from the South Carolina Democrat’s perspective.

Clyburn is often credited with the current president’s victory in the 2020 South Carolina primary, which gave him the momentum to secure his place at the top of the Democratic ticket that year. However, a shadow was cast over Biden’s re-election chances last week due to the president’s poor debate performance, in which his voice was hoarse and he stumbled over his words.

In the interview with “The Hill”, Clyburn acknowledged that last Thursday night’s debate was “a bad night” for the president.

“I know this: I think the American people want an explanation; they need to be reassured and I hope in the next few days we do that,” Clyburn said.

Some Democrats have called for Biden to withdraw from this year’s presidential race or be replaced at the top of his party’s ticket after Thursday’s debate, including former Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), who threw his support behind the vice president. President Harris to replace the president.

“Harris has grown significantly in her work; she will destroy [former President Trump] under debate, highlighted [the] issue of choice, energize our base, bring back young voters and provide us with generational change. The time has come!” Ryan wrote in a social media post on Tuesday.
