Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said a report on the attempted assassination of former President Trump could be released by the end of the year.

The House unanimously approved a task force last week to investigate the assassination attempt on Trump, who was shot during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. later in the year, on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” McCaul said yes.

“I think so. I went to the location. I went up to the roof. This guy should never have been that close to the President of the United States. It was very, very close. And the fact that he got there in the first place was a failure. It should have been interrupted,” he told presenter Robert Costa.

“What’s interesting, Robert, is that he had a detonation device and two bombs in the car. His plan was to assassinate the president, create a distraction by blowing up his vehicle on the other side of the property, and then he could escape,” he said.

McCaul said he did not know if he would be part of the task force investigating the incident, but would participate if asked. He also said he was “happy” to see former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resign from her position following the assassination attempt on the former president.

“And I’m glad that Director Cheatle did the right thing and resigned, like President Reagan’s Secret Service director did. Anytime there’s an assassination attempt, that’s a failure and she said so herself. I think agents are I think the problem is that the president is obviously under a lot of threats and also one from Iran. They asked for additional agents but they didn’t get that,” he said.

The incident raised concerns and raised questions about how the shooter managed to get close enough to shoot the former president.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (DN.Y.) announced the bipartisan task force last week to investigate the attempted assassination of Trump. The former president was hit by a bullet in the ear when a gunman opened fire during his rally in Pennsylvania earlier this month. The shooter was killed by a counter-sniper after hitting the former president.
