Eight protesters were arrested Monday during a climate protest outside the office of vice presidential candidate Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio).

Before the arrests, several dozen Sunrise Movement protesters gathered outside Vance’s office chanting and shouting in protest, including a chant of “Vance is a liar, our planet is on fire.”

Police tried to free the protesters on Monday morning, but some of them did not want to leave Vance’s office. A police officer asked, “Do you want to be arrested?” before additional authorities tied protesters’ hands behind their backs with cable ties. Police officers also chased reporters away from the area.

Capitol Police spokeswoman Brianna Burch said the eight arrests were for violating laws against demonstrating inside congressional office buildings.

Vance was announced earlier this month as former President Trump’s running mate.

The arrested protesters were among dozens who joined the Sunrise demonstration.

“JD Vance claims to be fighting for workers, but the reality is he is willing to sell everything for a few hundred thousand dollars,” said Aru Shiney-Ajay, executive director of the Sunrise Movement. “We’re trying to expose the hypocrisy and corruption he represents and cut through the narrative that he’s pro-Midwestern or pro-Appalachia.”

“He is promoting policies that will cause floods, heat waves and price increases. It is eliminating the creation of good, green jobs,” Shiney-Ajay added.

The Hill has reached out to Vance’s office for comment.
