Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said in an interview that aired Tuesday morning that a sloping roof used by the gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Trump last weekend at a rally had “security considerations.” safety factor”.

“This particular building has a pitched roof, at its highest point,” Cheatle said in an interview that aired on ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Tuesday morning with the channel’s Pierre Thomas. “And then, there’s a safety factor that would be considered: We wouldn’t want to put someone on a sloped roof. And so, the decision was made to protect the building, from the inside.”

Former President Trump faced an assassination attempt Saturday at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Cheatle and the Secret Service have been scrutinized for their handling of the incident, but Cheatle said in part of the interview with Thomas that aired Monday night that she will not step out of her role.

“I intend to continue,” Cheatle said.

The US Secret Service received support from Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas following the shooting, who said he had “100 percent” confidence in the Secret Service.

“I appreciate the secretary’s comments. And we will continue to be transparent and communicate with people,” she said in the ABC interview.
